Inside or outside IR35 — what does it mean for a Thames Valley contractor?
The Thames Valley's tech and telecoms corridor is contractor country, so the recurring questions are about how you are engaged and how you are paid. Under the off-payroll working rules a medium or large end client determines your status; where a contract is inside IR35, tax and National Insurance come off at source and a limited company buys you much less than it used to. Umbrella employment is the usual alternative, and the margin and holiday-pay arrangement are both worth reading properly before you sign. Where a contract is genuinely outside, a director taking a small salary plus dividends still needs the maths run: the dividend allowance is far smaller than it once was, and the rates step up with your other income.
