What does an IR35 decision mean for a Thames Valley contractor?
Contracting is common in the Thames Valley's tech and telecoms businesses, so the questions are about how contractors are engaged and paid. Under the off-payroll working rules, a medium or large end client decides your status. Where a contract is inside IR35, tax and National Insurance are deducted before you are paid, and working through a limited company saves much less than it used to. Working through an umbrella company is the usual alternative, so read its margin and holiday pay terms before you sign. Where a contract is outside IR35, a small salary plus dividends still needs working out, because the dividend allowance is now £500 and dividend tax rates rise with your other income.
