Where your location changes your tax

Income tax, property taxes, business rates and grants differ between the four nations of the UK. We cover all four online.
What it affects	Does it change by nation?
Corporation tax	No. The same rates apply across the UK, wherever the company is registered.
VAT	Mostly no. The registration threshold and the rates are UK-wide, but Northern Ireland follows EU VAT rules for goods under the Windsor Framework.
National Insurance	No. Employer and employee National Insurance are UK-wide.
Income tax on your salary and profits	Yes. Scotland sets its own rates and bands for income other than savings and dividends, and has more bands than the rest of the UK. Wales can set its own rates and currently uses the same rates as England and Northern Ireland. Which rates apply depends on where your main home is.
Buying premises	Yes. Stamp Duty Land Tax in England and Northern Ireland, Land and Buildings Transaction Tax in Scotland, Land Transaction Tax in Wales. Each has its own rates and thresholds.
Business rates and grants	Yes. Rates relief and the grant schemes you can apply for are set separately by each nation, and the local growth hub or enterprise agency differs again by region.
