Assumptions

What these calculators assume

You live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland
Scotland sets its own income tax rates and bands on earned income. If you live there, the income tax figure will be wrong — use the Scottish option where a calculator offers one, and ask us where it doesn't.
A full tax year
Start or stop part-way through a year and your allowances are not used the way these sums assume. The answer will usually be too high.
One source of income
A second job, a pension, rental income or savings interest all stack on top and can push you into a higher band — or into the £100,000 range where the personal allowance is withdrawn.
Nothing unusual in your situation
Student loan repayments, the High Income Child Benefit Charge, salary sacrifice, a company car, marriage allowance. Each one moves the number, and none of them fits in a five-field form.

These are the four things that most often make a quick estimate land a long way from the real bill.

Using an estimate

How to act on one of these numbers

  • Use it to set money aside, not to plan a purchase. Round the answer up, move that much into a separate account, and forget it. Most people who get caught out had the right number and never moved the money.
  • Run it again when something changes. A pay rise, a new contract, a first employee, crossing the VAT threshold. Each of those changes the answer, and none of them announces itself.
  • Compare two versions of a decision, not one. These tools are at their most useful run twice — salary at one level and then another, or before and after a hire — because the difference between two estimates is far more reliable than either estimate on its own.
