Mettle is open to sole traders and to limited companies with up to two owners, and only one of those owners can access the account. One account per person. Owners have to be UK tax resident, and the balance limit is £1 million.
That two-owner ceiling matters more than it sounds. A company with three co-founders on the share register cannot open a Mettle account at all. Neither can one where both directors need to see the balance, because only one login exists. If either of those is you, do not spend an afternoon on the application.
What we do instead: Starling and Tide both take multi-owner companies, both give every director their own access, and both feed cleanly into FreeAgent and Xero. You lose the free FreeAgent licence on that route, so we either carry it on our practice account or quote you Xero. We work that out with you before you open anything, because moving a business bank account twice in a year is a genuine nuisance and the point is to do it once.
