FreeAgent accountants for startups: the finance stack, sorted on day one.

For simpler companies, our fee includes a FreeAgent subscription, which costs a limited company £330 a year + VAT bought direct. Invoicing, expenses, bank feeds and a running tax estimate are kept in one place, and your accountant works in the same account.

What FreeAgent does

Invoicing and getting paid
Invoices with automatic payment reminders and card payments. FreeAgent shows what you are owed without a spreadsheet.
Bank feeds
Transactions come in from the bank automatically, and FreeAgent learns how to categorise them.
A live tax estimate
An estimate of the tax you owe, updated as transactions come in, so you can see your first corporation tax bill building through the year.
Expenses from your phone
Photograph a receipt in the app and FreeAgent records the expense, including mileage, home office costs and subscriptions.
Making Tax Digital
Files VAT returns and Income Tax quarterly updates to HMRC under Making Tax Digital.
A named accountant
Your accountant checks the numbers in FreeAgent, answers your questions and files your returns on time.

How the free FreeAgent licence works

FreeAgent is free for as long as you hold a business current account with NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank or Mettle. The arrangement is FreeAgent’s own, and it applies to every customer of those banks.

With Mettle, the licence stays free only while you make at least one transaction a month from the Mettle account. In a month without one, the licence moves to a paid plan, so keeping Mettle as a spare account while your money runs through another bank ends the free licence.

Where a client uses Mettle, we set it up as the account the business runs on, with its bank feed connected to FreeAgent from the start, so transactions reach the books without anyone typing them in.

If you would rather bank elsewhere, tell us at the start. We will either put the FreeAgent licence on our own practice account or move you to Xero, and quote accordingly.

When a company outgrows FreeAgent

Stock you hold, count, pick and pack
FreeAgent has no stock control. We move you to Xero with an inventory app added, and the fee changes to match.
Invoicing and buying in several currencies
FreeAgent can invoice in foreign currencies, but it does less than Xero when balances held in other currencies need restating at current exchange rates, so we move you to Xero.
A holding company with subsidiaries
FreeAgent does not combine a group's companies into one set of accounts. We prepare the group accounts outside FreeAgent.
Hundreds of bills a month
We add FreeAgent's unlimited receipt capture add-on at £5 a month + VAT, or a separate tool for processing bills.

Buzz is also a Xero Gold Partner, so any of these means moving your books to Xero while you stay with us.

FreeAgent questions

Is FreeAgent included in your fee?

For simpler companies, yes. The FreeAgent licence is included in our fee, so you do not pay a separate subscription. A limited company subscribing directly pays £330 a year + VAT on annual billing. The unlimited receipt capture and Amazon marketplace add-ons are charged separately.

I already use FreeAgent. Can you take over my account?

Yes. We connect to your existing FreeAgent account as your accountant, and your records stay in the account. The subscription moves onto our partner licence, so you stop paying for it.

Is FreeAgent right for startups?

For a simple company with no stock to count, one main currency and no group of companies, it works well. FreeAgent was built for freelancers and small businesses. A startup that plans to hire, raise money, hold stock or trade in several currencies is better on Xero, which is the software we recommend for most startups.

Do you also support Xero?

Yes. Buzz is a Xero Gold Partner, and Xero is the software we recommend for most startups. Xero is paid to Xero, and its UK plans start at £18 a month + VAT.

Can FreeAgent handle Making Tax Digital?

Yes. FreeAgent files VAT returns to HMRC under Making Tax Digital, and it sends the quarterly updates that Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requires.
